K-Bar Encounter

I'll tell you of a girl I met
    I never got her name
    her age was twenty seven
and her looks were far from plain

she was sitting in a montana bar
    with her new cowboy fellow
    playing pool and getting drunk
    with a couple from Pocatello

I walked in and joined the party
(they talk to strangers up there)
we drank our beer and told our lies
    no one had a care

In the course of the entertainment
I asked this pert young lady
what course of events had placed her
in our company, oh so shady

It seems she was an executive
or manager or some such fate
    with United Parcel Service
in some God awful eastern state

but one day she woke up
and Decided with a capital "D"
    that United Parcel Service
    was no fitting destiny

She had heard the tales of Yellowstone
of the people and the places
so she rented her house, quit her job
    and headed for western spaces

She's with us for the summer
after that, she has no plan
She's living her life, day by day
    hiking, laughing, and getting tan

This woman reminded me of a basic truth
for those who have the nerve
just because you live the straight and narrow
it's not too late to swerve
